RTBC Upper Extremity Practice Exam

The correct identification of the two types of bone found in the upper extremity is based on their structural composition. The upper extremity primarily consists of both compact bone and spongy bone.

Compact bone, also referred to as cortical bone, is the dense outer layer that provides strength and rigidity to the bone structure. It is essential for supporting the body and allowing for weight-bearing activities. On the other hand, spongy bone, or cancellous bone, is found at the ends of long bones and within some flat bones. It has a porous structure that makes it lighter and aids in the production of blood cells through its red marrow while also absorbing shock during movement.

These two types of bone work together to create a balanced structural framework, managing both strength and flexibility across the upper extremity. Other classifications such as flat bone or irregular bone pertain to bone shapes rather than their internal structure, which is why they are not appropriate options in this context. Similarly, long and short bones refer to bone length rather than their types based on composition. Thus, compact and spongy bone accurately represent the two main types in the upper extremity.
